OursYours was a successful pilot micro-hotel in Whitechapel set up by a socially enterprising couple Ben and Laura. Designed to give guests an artistic and community centric stay in the heart of thriving East London, it offered a curated guide to local, independent, food, culture and activities and on-site shop of locally produced refreshments and gifts. 5% of revenue supported neighbourhood projects. CRAFTY COMMUNITY MICRO HOTEL
The brief for this one bedroom apartment was to create a visually striking, contemporary feel which would evoke a feeling of surprise, delight and playfulness on a super slight budget. Utilising different painting techniques and the rich brand palette we transformed the tired kitchen cabinets into a drippy canvas work of art. I sourced some fabulous pieces of iconic furniture including a Mid Century Modern turquoise kidney stool made by Quinlan-Crawford Ltd in Ontario, Canada and an Ercol Cowhorn chair. Taking inspiration from the history of Whitechapel I incorporated references to the industrial, brewery and tannery past, migrant community and vibrant market, with leather and sari fabric details, boxes and crates, local craft beer bottle installation in a wall recess and bright Bangladeshi kantha bed throw. We thrifted and up-cycled shelves and a table, as well as many other finer details. Wallpaper by Sian Elin. Bedside and coffee tables by OpenDesk. Folded paper frames by Holoframe.
